In a surprising turn of events, Sony has taken a stroll down memory lane, reviving the long-dormant Killzone franchise in The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered. It's been over a decade since the last Killzone game graced the gaming world, with the series' hiatus leaving fans yearning for more. Now, a subtle nod in the form of an in-game T-shirt within The Last of Us 2 Remastered has reignited the fervor among Killzone enthusiasts.
Guerrilla Games, known for its sci-fi first-person shooter series, once positioned as a potential Halo contender, last treated fans to a new installment with the PlayStation 4 launch title Killzone Shadow Fall in 2013. Unfortunately, since the closure of Shadow Fall's servers in 2022, the Killzone universe has remained in hibernation.
The unexpected resurgence in The Last of Us 2 Remastered, which also pays homage to other dormant PlayStation franchises like Resistance, The Getaway, Twisted Metal, and WipEout, has triggered a notable reaction, especially in the Killzone community.
Despite a decade passing since Shadow Fall, Sony has maintained radio silence regarding any plans to revisit the Killzone franchise. Instead, Guerrilla Games pivoted to the immensely successful Horizon Zero Dawn in 2017, amassing over 20 million copies sold. Horizon has since become the studio's focal point, with the release of Horizon Forbidden West in 2022 and the PlayStation VR2 launch title Horizon Call of the Mountain in 2023. The studio is also actively developing a multiplayer Horizon game and a third mainline installment for the franchise.
With Guerrilla's director, Jan Bart van Beek, expressing a long-term commitment to the Horizon franchise, including plans extending beyond the Forbidden West sequel, the prospects for a Killzone revival seem dim. Redditor alefava99 encapsulated the sentiment, lamenting, "Sons and daughters of Helghan, let us hope for a Killzone comeback."
As the gaming community grapples with the unlikelihood of a Killzone revival, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered serves as an unexpected bearer of nostalgia, rekindling memories of a once-mighty franchise that now rests in the annals of gaming history.
